On 1 July 2010, the NSW State Parking Levy was increased for the third consecutive year.
This follows a substantial increase in 2009 whereby the NSW Government increased your parking tax in the CBD by 110% - resulting in $109 million of revenue generated by the levy. The Levy is ostensibly intended to ease congestion in major commercial centres, encourage the use of public transport, and improve air quality. However, research carried out by the NRMA indicates that 85% of peak hour traffic which enters the CBD passes straight through. Furthermore, the NSW State Government has not addressed concerns which were raised after last year's increase by Secure Parking (as part of the Parking Operator"s Association), The Auditor-General, The Liberal Opposition, and various retail and industry bodies, including:
